Recently, I heard a joke about how COVID-19 and its variants have affected us: we’ve all joined a fraternity, Alpha Delta Omicron. There is little to find humorous in COVID times; we, like rushing fraternity pledges, have been through the hazing rituals: quarantine, masking, social distancing, shortages. We have rediscovered our families; we have cut back on the insane number of work hours; and we have delighted in the simple pleasures of life. And, many of us left our former jobs to curate a life in the “Great Resignation.”

Some people bemoan the loss of ‘normal.’ Some lament ‘the new normal.’ Why do we crave ‘normal’? Think back. What was so great about pre-COVID ‘normal’? Political division. Contemptuous nationalism. Raging racism. Anger. Runaway crime. Conspiracy theories. Is that the ‘normal’ you want to go back to? Not me.

What I want is for our collective consciousness to rise, to honor nature, to squelch hate, to teach open-mindedness, to strive for justice for all, to demonstrate love, to listen to one another, to curate passions, to work within boundaries, to stay in the present moment, to re-imagine life.

A pipe dream? If we commit to building a new earth, imagine what we can do together. COVID times have given us the chance to do a hard reset on our lives, our culture, our world. Eventually, after having experienced Alpha, Delta, Omicron, life can give rise to a new start for us all.
